Call from Amazon. Told to go online and check emails because somebody was taking £700 from my account. I said no and rang off. Called again wanting to know why I rang off and to get on the computer. Someone called Katey rang. She claimed she was calling from a company called Switch safer. She asked if my gas appliances were insured. I told her she was breaking the law by phoning me, as I was a member of TPS (telephone preference service. She said she had a filtering device that filtered out TPS members. She then asked if I had paid a £5 to TPS, because If I had not, she was within the law to phone me. TPS later told me that this was rubbish. There is no £5 charge. They are now taking legal action and

SCAM HMRC is aware of an automated phone call scam which will tell you HMRC is filing a lawsuit against you, and to press 1 to speak to a caseworker to make a payment. We can confirm this is a scam and you should end the call immediately. This scam has been widely reported and often targets elderly and vulnerable people.
Keep on ringing and when I pick up there is no answer on their end. Had about two calls in the space of two minutes and three in fifteen.

I have to assume this is a scam as there is no way of speaking to anyone if you return the call. Very irritating and a poor way to do business!

An automated computer call to test if the connection is a voice line, if you speak your number will be listed and you'll be called back by an agent - who will usually be trying to SCAM YOU. SOLUTION: Whenever the phone rings with a number you don't recognise DON'T SAY HELLO OR MAKE ANY OTHER SOUND! Always wait for the caller to speak first. If the line hangs up you can be certain it was a scam. STAY SAFE - Don't accept or respond to unsolicited calls.
