But as it was left on answering machine this could not be done. No card provider specified and they didn't address me by name. On checking, no such payments have been made from any of my cards.

Some pre recorded computer voice voicemail message (I don't answer any number I don't know) something it said "case which is going to be filed against you our letter got returned please press one to avoid legal actions I" then it cut off. Known scam 0845 and 0843 numbers call for a second or two. They rely on you to call back as the number looks official. You are then played a recorded message that is designed to keep you on the line as the call is charged at over a £1 per minute. So you end up paying for the scam and your phone company probably won't help as you made the call willingly.
